In past few years you may have heard about this new device that is supposedly better than smoking. It looks like a cigarette but does not have the same harmful effects. The new device has been spotted almost everywhere. Airports, buses, bars and restaurants which are places where smoking is generally not allowed now have people vaping to their heart’s delight. But there is a continuing debate whether electronic cigarettes are the safe devices that they are purported to be. There is also a c0ntention that electronic cigarettes are making smoking glamorous and enticing young people to become addicted to smoking. Is this true?
It is hard
For now it is hard to make a definitive call whether or not electronic cigarettes are 100 percent safe. The thing is that compared to traditional cigarettes—electronic cigarettes are safer and healthier. From a harm-reduction standpoint, electronic cigarettes are safer because of the absence of the harm-causing chemicals that are found in tobacco. Electronic cigarettes are battery-powered devices capable of converting a liquid filled with pure nicotine into a vapor that is being inhales just like how a smoker uses a traditional cigarette. The main difference is that the six thousand or so chemicals are absent in vapes. Vapes, at the same time, do not produce smoke but vapor. Vapor occurs naturally and is the reason why water dries up and goes into the atmosphere and returns to earth as rain.
It needs more facts
The reality is that there is not much known about vapes. Scientists believe that once there would be sufficient data and studies—it would be only then that science can confirm whether electronic cigarettes are harmful or not. There have been studies for and against vaping. But none of them can definitely support whether the product is safe or not.
It lacks the regulation
One of the things that people are worried about vaping is the lack of regulation. Generally, electronic cigarettes remain unregulated. This means there is no oversight and supervision on how vapes are made and the contents of the liquids that are being used by vapers. There is no set standard where the makers should follow to ensure that each product adheres to the specifications as provided by regulators. This pose a greatproblem to people that is not fully convinced that a product that is made in China would be safe enough to be used by other people in other places.
It can lead to other things
The greatest fear of scientists is the fact that electronic cigarettes can become a gateway of addicts to use tobacco down the line. Then again this fear is at most real in thought experiments as no actual tests have been made to validate this theory. Nicotine is a highly addictive drug and it can overrule the pleasure centers of the brain. That is why people are not exactly keen on quitting because of the withdrawal symptoms associated with nicotine addiction. But the use of vapes may be abused by some people to try to get addicted to nicotine and finally use tobacco later on for better nicotine experience. This remains unfounded and has no basis on science.
Now we need to re-visit the earlier question that was posed earlier. Are electronic cigarettes safe? In theory it is. But there is a need to get into the bottom of things. Once the studies and the toxicology reports are in—that will determine the answer to the question. For now, let us just enjoy vaping and keep the chemicals at bay and hope to use it to end nicotine addiction for good.
